Abdominal bloating effects up to one third of the population as some surveys have shown. Some minor bloating seems to be normal, as any time we eat or drink something, this takes up space in our stomach and intestines and is going to cause expansion. However, if this is a persistent problem and is affecting your day-to-day life, you may want and need to make some small changes to your diet to reduce this bloating. Lets discuss some foods that can help eliminate bloating when consumed.

Bananas can be beneficial for eliminating abdominal bloating. They are rich in potassium which can help to prevent water retention by regulating sodium levels in our body. This can have a tremendously positive effect on sodium-induced bloating. As well, bananas contain soluble fibre, which can help to prevent or even relieve constipation. Constipation can lead to bloating since wastes are not being eliminated properly.

Cucumbers can reduce abdominal bloating. They contain good amounts of a flavonoid antioxidant called quercetin, which helps to reduce swelling. Cucumbers are also beneficial for bloating since they have been shown to inhibit the activity of pro-inflammatory enzymes. Try adding cucumbers to your salads or smoothies, or even to water you are drinking.

Asparagus is known as an anti-bloating superfood for a number of reasons. It promotes urination when consumed, which has the benefit of flushing out excess water. As well, asparagus contains healthy prebiotics, which can promote the health and growth of good bacteria. This good bacteria can help to maintain a healthy digestive system and prevent and reduce gas. They also contain good amounts of both soluble and insoluble fibre which promotes overall digestive health.

Ginger can help to reduce bloating since it is a natural anti-inflammatory. As well, it is also a tremendous digestive aid that can help to soothe the digestive system and muscles in the digestive tract due to its nutritional profile. This can provide the benefit of relieving bloating. Ginger also contains an important enzyme that works to absorb proteins. This gives the added benefit of reducing protein-induced bloat and gas.

Lastly, we can consume papaya to help reduce and eliminate bloating. Papain is an enzyme found in this fruit that works to promote the breakdown of proteins in your GI system, making digestion more easy. It also has great anti-inflammatory properties and fibre that keep our digestive tract healthy, strong and functioning properly. You can add papaya to your favourite smoothie recipe or simply eat it raw.
