Here is what you should know about cyclonic activity in India as Cyclone Gaja is going to hit the coast of Tamil Nadu today. It is the third cyclone to hit the Indian mainland this year after cyclone Daye and Titli. Both of them had made landfall along the coast of Odisha. In 2018, 13 depressions have formed in the North Indian Ocean. This is the highest number of depressions in the past 26 years. With the cyclone season running, this number might further increase. India is exposed to 10% of the world's tropical cyclones, says National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project The two worst cyclones in the recent history have been Odisha Super Cyclone in 1999 and Andhra Pradesh Super Cyclone in 1990 The damage done by the Odisha Super Cyclone was $6.7 billion (inflation adjusted 2018) and it killed more than 10,000 people. Approximately 76% of the total loss of human lives from cyclonic storms have occurred in India and Bangladesh From 1891-2000, while 308 cyclones hit the eastern coast, only 48 affected the western coast. The North Indian Ocean over the Arabian Sea will witness an increase in the frequency of extremely severe cyclonic storms because of global warming, said IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius
