Thousands filled with grief at PA shooting vigil

(28 Oct 2018) Thousands of people gathered in Pittsburgh late on Saturday for an emotional vigil for the victims of the deadly synagogue shooting. Braving a light rain, they said prayers and sang in memory of those killed and wounded. Several blamed the shooting on the political climate and said they took little solace in a planned visit by President Donald Trump. Cindy Jennings, in attendance with her friends, said she couldn't believe the wave of violence currently enveloping the country. Joni and Gary Schwager agreed, saying they, too, believed the violence was a result of the rhetoric coming from elected officials at the White House, adding that they believed that the way forward was to vote in the midterm elections. A gunman who's believed to have spewed anti-Semitic slurs and rhetoric on social media barged into a baby-naming ceremony at the synagogue on Saturday and opened fire, killing 11 people in one of the deadliest attacks on Jews in US history. The 20-minute attack at Tree of Life Congregation in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood left at least six others wounded, including four police officers who dashed to the scene, authorities said.
