Raymond Atkins was born in Franklin County, Virginia in 1943. He grew up in a family of six children - four brothers and two sisters. He grew up moving between Floyd County and Franklin County. At age 16, he went to work at a service station, and he moved on to work in a furniture factory at 18. For eight years he worked at the Radford Arsenal. He also drove truck a while.  He moved on to residential and commercial construction and stayed for 19 years, building mostly apartment buildings. Before retiring, he worked 13 years at H&V in Floyd County. Now he mostly plays with his grandkids when he can.
