His intricate renditions bring every tiny detail to life and his understanding of light and shade invite the viewer to look into the shadows where they'll find even more elements to the "story". Reptiles – and particularly Australian lizards – are one of David's favourite subjects and he paints them with a familiarity that gives the animal a quality of being right there. The detail of scale, of claw, eye and expression is exquisite, creating a presence that is both enigmatic and revealing. Adding further complexity to his paintings, David often creates a surrealistic quality by merging creatures into a mosaic pattern that simply doesn't look like it could have been created by hand. Hours of laborious work go into each and every one of David's paintings and he produces only a small number of originals each year. Consequently, they are in high demand. Selected works are available in limited edition prints of no more than 95 copies per piece. His works have been selected exclusively for display in the Ashley Medical Centre in Sydney, with 22 prints on permanent display. Most recently, his painting of the NSW state floral emblem, the waratah, was presented to the NSW Governor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, by the University of Sydney's Medical Research Foundation and it now hangs in the main foyer of Government House in Sydney. Not surprisingly, David's background is in commercial photography and newspaper production. He also worked for some time in the ABC's special effects department, further enhancing his creative three dimensional skills. He studied at the historic Julian Ashton Art School in 1968 before studying interior design and sculpture at East Sydney Tech. David Calrow's artwork is particularly suited to corporate buyers, where a selection of pieces, all of a particular theme, is required for display. As the above indicates, the reality is that people have a fundamental need to have their occupational and recreational spaces enriched. It's important to enhance our lives with some meaning and visual pleasure to create cultural enlightenment and awareness in our everyday existence. The prints displayed on this website reflect a different way in which to present your professional environments. They represent a move away from the traditional wall hangings found in the majority of workplaces.
