DAYTON The Dayton Police Department is working on catching stolen vehicles through devices that can read license plates. Right now the department has 8 license plate readers. The technology is able to read each license plate that passes by through an infrared camera that connects to a police database of vehicles. The database checks a list of stolen, wanted vehicles as well as if registered owners have any warrants, said Lieutenant Matthew Dickey. Lt. Dickey said the readers arent new but they are concentrating their efforts in the downtown area right now, thats part of our target area, just because on weekends there are people in the bar district who come down to the area that may not be there otherwise. The department only has a handful of the readers because they cost upwards of thousands of dollars.
