The new law would have given councils preventative powers to protect young girls at risk of FGM. It went through the House of Lords unopposed and was due to be passed as a Private Members Bill in the House of Commons on Friday. But Sir Christopher Chope, MP for Christchurch in Dorset blocked the bill with his singular objection, claiming it was an act of 'virtue signalling'. Sir Christopher, 71, came under fire earlier this year by blocking a bill that would have criminalised upskirting. The Tory backbencher is notorious for blocking bills on principle, having delayed a posthumous pardon for academic Alan Turing and a debate on the Hillsborough disaster in the same way. He sparked mass outrage on Twitter (post pictured inset) and after appearing on Radio 4's Today programme with FGM campaigner Nimco Ali (pictured right) with calls for him to be deselected.
