The front garden of my North Wales home has a delighfull prospect that looks to the Wirral peninsular and the Cheshire plain. Late afternoon on 30 June 2015, I noticed a vast plume of dark smoke in the sky. It was billowing from the flare tower over at the Stanlow Oil Refinery -and heading in the direction of Flint/Connahs Quay/Shotton, just across the North Wales border. Are events such as this, something that Deeside residents might have to get used to? Already Shotton is the location for, what is believed to be the UK's largest waste-incinerator. In 2023, further proposals are in the pipeline for a "blue" hydrogen processing site at Stanlow/Ince in Cheshire. This will take natural gas from under the sea off North Wales and strip-out the unwanted carbon before feeding the remaining, fossil-based hydrogen into the gas grid. The whole proposal seems to me like a massively expensive (through Government subsidy) exercise, the science and appropriateness of which has been completely lost on the UK and Welsh Government officials who think it's a good idea. This must be stopped NOW! In the meantime, I'll be watching & filming whatever might come drifting in the air around my way. Let's hope conservation and environment experts across this beautiful borderlands area have the capability and inclination to monitor local air quality. This sort of event must never blight the health & well-being of folks in North Wales. Notes: Event captured, as it happened, 30 June 2015 (late afternoon) from location at Aston, Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales border.
