This past year was the worst on record for gun violence in schools, according to data from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. New numbers from the CDC also show gun deaths across the U.S. have reached the highest levels since the organization started tracking 40 years ago. In 2018 alone, there were more than 300 mass shootings, defined as incidents in which three or more people were killed. These included shootings in at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Maryland, mass shootings at high schools in Santa Fe and Parkland, and a synagogue shooting in Baltimore. The youth movement to combat gun violence through stronger gun control laws led to the national ‘March For Our Lives’ and gave rise to teen activists who have since become household names, like Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg. Jim Braude was joined by Jennifer Braceras, Senior Fellow with conservative nonprofit Independent Women's Forum; Michael Curry, former president of the Boston NAACP, now chair of the national NAACP Advocacy & Policy Committee; and Martha Coakley, former state Attorney General, now partner at Foley Hoag.
