This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. James Vaughn shares his personal story of growing up in Paterson, New Jersey and the choices that he made which landed him in our nation's prison system. After serving over 10 years, James talks about what he learned, and the difficulty formerly incarcerated individuals face re-entering the community after being released. James' big idea is in how our community can realize the power of the potential that exists with this returning population and how we can work to create opportunities and second chances for those who have served their time. James is a Prevention Health Advocate, Case Manager, Returning Citizen, Adult student and founder of Incarcerated Flavors, an organization which showcases the art/literary works of those who are incarcerated and provides resources to formerly incarcerated individuals who are re-entering the community. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
