Hedegaard Presides Over COP15 Climate Change Talks

Connie Hedegaard, Denmark's climate change minister, has become president of the COP15 talks on global warming in Copenhagen this week. 

At the end of this month Hedegaard will become the first-ever Climate Commissioner of the European Union.

"The pressure on the United States has not exactly diminished. If the United States wishes to play the part of world leader in the 21st century, they are expected to commit to this deal. The Americans know this.

It is no good thinking that we will do all the easy deals in Copenhagen, and save the complicated problems for later. That will not work. Everything is connected. We cannot just make all the small deals now, and save the questions of goals and financing for later. Things are too interconnected, also for the developing countries, who are waiting to know how we want them to adapt to the climate changes, but to do that they need financing. To get financing we need a bigger commitment from the developed countries. Things are connected and this is why we need a complete deal in Copenhagen.

No one believes that when Copenhagen is over, everyone can relax for the next 10 years; a lot of details will need to be fully laid out. What is important is: Will we get a committed deal in Copenhagen? A piece of paper means nothing if the politicians and governments of 192 countries does not agree to commit to actually doing something. All the details can be solved later, but a political commitment is crucial in Copenhagen."
