A pretty manic version of Gates of Delirium here, posting for a fellow youtuber whose cover I played along with. It was just exactly the perfect mix I was looking for of mother concentration and reckless abandon to the inevitable mistakes and finding my way gracefully our of them melodically. Here is a guy who manifestly knows the song in and out in his head but hasn't mastered the execution in places, or is still figuring out his tweaks to it (I do that regularly, especially in my Dream Theater covers). There were parts that flowed very well rhythmically as I played along, others that were a bit more stumbly, like "Wait...where are you again??" moments that keep you on your toes. Well, this one kept me on my toes from start to finish and I wasn't so much focussing on the drums as I was on keeping up my end of the playing, basically testing my own knowledge of the song - good practice for those rare times when a good drummer just has a bad night on stage, is sick or tired and flubs the odd key part - someone's gotta fill the role of timekeeper and I like to think I can hold up that end pretty well if need be. So this was a first take playing along to a cover I'd never heard before, hoping for the best but expecting roughness (it's a damn hard song on any instrument). After hearing it on playback and imagining it in a live setting where the mistakes aren't so apparent...fuck that rocked.
