This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Play, spontaneity and silliness are very powerful and very serious ways to
engage with others and to experience life in a deep way. This talk is
drawn from my experiences as a children’s musician to show that play –
whether in the arts or in other areas – breaks down barriers and affects
people in ways that we rarely realize. Ultimately, being open to play
and to what it can teach us allows us to more fully and more joyfully
participate in life.

Patrick Raftery performs music for children and their grown-ups, both as a
solo artist and with his group, “Patrick & The Rock-A-Silly Band.” He’s
played shows everywhere from Central Park to the Staten Island and
Brooklyn Children’s Museums and everywhere in between. Patrick is a
two-time grant recipient from “Staten Island Arts”, and in 2013 was
elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Staten Island Children’s
Museum. Join the fun at Musicwithpatrick.com

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
