Veteran Brutally Attacked By Man He Trusted

DAYTON -- Sixty-year-old Dennis Egnor fought back tears as he told me the story of a man he thought wanted to help him who instead beat me up and robbed him. "He started kicking me in my stomach. I had blood running out of my nose and mouth," Egnor said. He says the suspect beat him up as he lay in his bed. "When I woke up some guy in a skeleton outfit with the mask was hitting me in my head, he said. But it wasn't a stranger who carried out the brutal beating. He says it was a man he trusted. "I started hollering, 'Please, Eddie, don't hit me no more,' he said, 'I am going to kill you, you M-F'er,' and started to hit me with the gun," he said. The Vietnam veteran says the man he trusted was Edward Combs. He says he even gave him keys to get his home ready so when he left rehab at Widow's home in East Dayton. "I can't believe he had done this because I had hired him a couple of weeks before to cut my grass, so when I go home someday and I paid him and he come back and robbed me," said Egnor. Egnor says he made the mistake of letting Combs see the wad of cash he had taken out of his account to repair water pipes at his house and as the suspect repeatedly punched him all he could think about was his granddaughter who had been murdered two years ago. "I was thinking maybe this is how God will let me see my granddaughter again," he said through tears. Despite all he was been through, and even as he lay in the hospital beaten and bruised, he says he couldn't help but think about the young man he considered a friend, who he says is battling a drug addiction. "I started praying. I said, 'God help him, that guy needs help, he really does,'" Egnor said. The suspect Edward Combs,  remains in the Montgomery County Jail on a 00,000 bond facing aggravated robbery charges.
