The enlightenment era (1700–1789) democratized thinking. Even ordinary people were told: ‘Dare to think for yourself!’. The Internet, with its promise of global equal access to all available knowledge, seems to cash this idea in. However, dependence on search engines and soon on the advice of (semi)-intelligent machines, threaten to bring back pre-enlightened times – times of intellectual dependence. Building on historical research on intellectual dependence and the regulation of opinion, the talk put the prospect of our digital future in perspective.
