Sherwood Latimer and Kathrine Vane spend a week in the posh apartment of millionaire John Slake: they have books, running water, plumbing (for 'other needs'), and comfortable furniture. But one item is missing: food. Also, they have no physical contact: a wall with a tiny shatter-proof sound-proof window bisects the apartment, with Latimer on one side and Katherine on the other. The young lovers can see each other, but cannot hear each other's words, nor can they touch."Elementals" is a dark study in human nature. It involves an experiment involving two willing participants, and tests the theory that hate and self-preservation are the overriding, primary motivators for all human endeavor. Stephen Vincent Benét preceded Rod Serling by some twenty years, but one can clearly find in his work precursors of the Twilight Zone. Thought-provoking and disturbing, one finds it difficult to forget.
