NEW DELHI: There was quite a buzz around India's tour of South Africa. Faf du Plessis had already spiced up the impending clash with his "score to settle" comment. His bowlers have given early bragging rights with the wickets of India openers and the prized scalp of captain Virat Kohli after South Africa were 286 all out in their first innings. The opening day of the first Test at Newlands lived up to the expectations offering an absorbing contest between the bat and ball. At the close of play, India were 28/3, trailing by 258 runs on Day 1 in Newlands.
All three Indian wickets to fall in the final session were batsmen's fault. Murali Vijay chased an outside off stump delivery to be caught at gully on 1 off Vernon Philander. Shikhar Dhawan (16) was looking good with two fours in the first over but then pulled one from the returning Dale Steyn to offer an easy return catch. At 18/2 in 5.2 overs, the onus fell on Kohli and the ever-dependable Cheteshwar Pujara to settle the jitters. But Morne Morkel rattled the visitors further, getting extra bounce and remove Kohli (5) with his first ball of the Test.

The second session mirrored the first with India snuffing out early wickets followed by counterattack from the South African batsmen with the hosts taking tea at 230/7 in 53 overs on Day 1 of the first Test in Newlands on Friday.
AB de Villiers was out after adding six runs to his total with Jasprit Bumrah accounting for him as his maiden Test wicket with an incoming delivery that crashed on the stumps after taking an inside edge. Bumrah thus broke the 114-run stand for the fourth wicket.
Faf du Plessis crashed Bumrah through point to reach his half-century and then smacked back-to-back fours off Pandya in the following over. He was well set when Pandya pinged him in front but Plessis survived the lbw shout after Indians reviewed the not out decision and then two balls later, got a thick edge to be out caught in the slips on 62 with captain Virat Kohli leading loud celebrations.
South Africa had lost half their side on 142 but then Quinton de Kock took the reins, clobbering three straight fours off Bumrah. India had exposed the South African lower order but Vernon Philander was solid as he got off the blocks with a crisp straight drive for four. The duo quickly raised a fifty stand for the sixth wicket and South Africa had again recovered from quick blows. With a four, De Kock took the score past the 200-run mark but then Bhuvneshwar Kumar induced an edge to have him out caught behind on 43 off 40.
Philander soon followed him to the dressing room after being clean bowled by Mohammed Shami on 23. Meanwhile, Keshav Maharaj was dropped in the slips by Shikhar Dhawan when he was yet to open his account. He went on to larrup R Aswhin for a straight six to remain unbeaten on 23 along with Kagiso Rabada (1*) when the tea break was taken.
The foundation of a breath-taking play was laid when Bhuvneshwar left South Africa in tatters with three wickets his first three overs. Then, the returning De Villiers launched a counterattack and together with his captain Du Plessis, repaired the damage with South Africa recovering from 12/3 to 107/3 in the morning session.
Du Plessis's punt of batting first after winning the toss seem to have backfired when Bhuvneshwar sliced through their top-three batsmen. He had Dean Elgar out caught behind on duck with the third delivery of the Test which just about moved away. Aiden Makram then drove Bhuvneshwar off an overpitched delivery for four. Bhuvneshwar followed that with an inswinger and Makram failed to bring his bat on time to be struck on the pad and adjudged lbw.
The third wicket brought more cheers that the previous two combined because it involved Hashim Amla who poked at an outside off delivery to hand Wriddhiman Saha his second catch of the morning. Reducing South Africa to 12/3 was a dream start for the visitors. And out came De Villiers to nullify that. He got off the mark with a four off the first delivery he faced. And then put the pressure back on Bhuvneshwar with four fours in an over.
The other two pacers Shami and debutant Bumrah failed to make an impact. De Villiers punished them with crisp boundaries whenever they overpitched or compensated that by bowling short. Du Plessis was the more measured of the duo, allowing De Villiers to attack.
Soon, De Villiers reached his 41st Test fifty, with a four off Shami in quicktime taking just 55 deliveries. And with a front foot pull, took the score past the three figures.
