UN SG welcomes Paris Climate Change Agreement

Calling it a historic and momentous day for humankind, the United Nations Secretary General has welcomed the entering into force of the landmark Paris Climate Change Agreement. The accord reached its ratification threshold of 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emission in early October - a record time period that has now seen close to 100 countries, including South Africa, ratify the agreement through national processes. The agreement that includes ratifications by the world's largest emitters, China and the United States, now requires an obligation of nations to keep global warming below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
