Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is issuing a plea to Kansans to help make it a merry Christmas for National Guard soldiers training for war.

About 430 soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery are training at Fort Bliss, Texas, for a deployment yet this winter to Iraq. State officials would like to bring them home but are prohibited by Department of Defense regulations from using National Guard funds to pay for travel.

Sebelius is asking residents, businesses and community organizations to make donations to help pay to bring the soldiers home to their families.
