The real reason I was in the Harmon Den Wildlife Management Area of Pisgah National Forest was to hike to Max Patch Mountain. I started at Brown Gap on the state border and followed the Appalachian Trail northeast. After climbing steeply over 600 feet out of Brown Gap the AT follows the ridgelines then climbs to the massive bald summit of Max Patch at 4,629 feet. Fortunately the clouds lifted after my visit to Chambers Mountain and the scenery was beautiful up top. There were over 50 people enjoying the 55F sunny weather. It was 3:30 PM when I reached the summit, so the sun was the worst in the southwest direction.

Immediately southwest the Great Smokies rise high, with Mt. Sterling, Mt. Guyot, and Mt. Cammerer the easiest peaks to identify. The Plott Balsams were further southwest and I could not differentiate these. Same goes with the Great Balsams to the south. The tallest peaks of the Newfound Mountains were southeast and provided the best pictures. Crabtree Bald, the tallest peak in the range, is the craggy pyramidal summit on the right side of this crest. The entire length of the Black Mountains could be seen east above the Newfound, Elk and Great Craggy Mountains. The Bald Mountains continue to the northeast, but the haze obscured views of the most identifiable peaks, at least for me. I don't know crap about the peaks in Tennessee, but they looked nice.

Hike was 7.1 miles in 3 hours and 15 minutes.
