Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.

It’s an important habit that can be overlooked during the holidays. “It’s great to start your day with a good filling breakfast. If you have parties or other holiday gatherings going on, the best methods is to stick to your normal healthy breakfast,” said Carrie Bloemers, manager of the Healthy Life Centers.

A healthy breakfast is the most important meal of the day. “You’re more efficient and effective at metabolizing carbohydrates and other substrates early in the morning as opposed to late in the evening,” said Bloemers.

While holiday parties, shopping, cooking, decorating, and traveling, can pull you out of your normal routine, health experts say make having a healthy breakfast a priority. “Most people decide instead they will skip breakfast because they know they are going to a party, and then we will overeat and regret our choices later in the day,” she said.

Which is why she recommends making overnight oats to help you stay on track. “When you make it from scratch you can add your own ground flax seed or chia seeds, something to give it more fiber and give more omegas. You can also add protein that can be a protein powder or even nut butter,” said Bloemers.

A healthy alternative to sugary cereals and high-fat pastries. “A lot of your store-bought cereals are high in sugar, lack fiber, they may be more fortified with vitamins and minerals, but if you pick a high-quality carbohydrate like rolled oats to make your overnight oats in you’re going to get that fiber and those natural B vitamins that are found in that food,” she said.

A quick and easy way to maintain a healthy routine keeps your holiday eating under control.
