VETERANS DAY CONCERT – WILL GOD BLESS AMERICA?
Invited by a friend, I went last night to hear the Melbourne Municipal Band perform their Veterans Day Concert at the Melbourne Auditorium. The concert ended with audience participation as the large crowd sang God Bless America. I changed the words slightly to: God bless the whole wide world. In one of the songs they played, the conductor from Washington, DC, a retired military officer, told the story from the World War I that took place in the German trenches just before Christmas. One of the German soldiers began singing Silent Night in German. Soon others joined in until the warring sides were singing together and actually joining each other, talking about their families and exchanging whatever they could in such bleak circumstances. The conductor ended the story with the soldiers going back to the trenches. He failed to tell the rest of the story. They could no longer fire on each other, despite the orders of the so-called superiors. The units had to be separated since the interlude of peace allowed them to get to know each other a little; and they simply could not maintain the idiotic battle. All wars are insane, financed on both sides by demented elements for whom money is the real purpose of war. It truly is a mad, mad, mad world! Will God bless the whole wide world! Is that even possible?
