Hollywood is rarely a latecomer when it comes to remaking popular Asian films, but the process can also work the other way round. The action comedy 'My Girlfriend is an Agent' is obviously inspired by 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' with a good dose of 'True Lies' added into the bargain. But it is far better than both of them put together. Soo-ji is a top secret agent of the hard-boiled kind, but her nerdy boyfriend thinks that she is a travel guide for Japanese tourists. Tired of being stood up time after time, he ends the relationship and travels abroad. Three years later, they meet again under breakneck circumstances. What Soo-ji doesn't know is that even her clumsy ex is a secret agent, albeit for a different organisation, and from their respective angles they are working on the same case, with all the entanglements this can bring with it. And that's all there is to it. 'My Girlfriend is an Agent' is an authentic piece of entertainment with a large-scale production and lots of spectacular action, cheerful humour - even for western audiences - and a superb chemistry between Kim Ha-neul and Kang Ji-wan in the lead roles. If Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had been just as convincing, they'd be facing a great future.
