(22 Nov 2018) One Honduran migrant, who joined the caravan heading north with the hopes of reaching the US, uses her talent for singing to help lighten the mood in the camp she shares with some 3,000 others in Tijuana. Mirna Yolanda Contreras, 30, arrived to the Mexican border city seven days ago and says her goal, like that of most other Central American migrants travelling in the caravan, is to reach the US. Contreras left her country weeks ago among thousands of others who say they fled from a life marked by poverty and joblessness, and surrounded by crime. Back in her home country, Contreras used to make bricks, sell tortillas, anything to earn a living. But Contreras never left her love of singing behind. On her journey, most of which has been on foot, she has been carrying a large speaker and a microphone. Contreras says that she loves singing as well as entertaining people. Despite her enthusiasm, Contreras says she does not believe in the American dream. "You go there to serve, to work hard for others to support your family," she says. U.S. border inspectors are processing only about 100 asylum claims a day at Tijuana's main crossing to San Diego, and there was already a waiting list of 3,000 when the new migrants arrived, so most will have to wait months to even be considered for asylum. The majority in the Central American caravan so far have refused Mexico's repeated offers of residency or asylum and vowed to cross the border.
