Greetings. I am Tim of Govberg, and I'll be your guide to the proper usage and care of the IWC Portofino Automatic 37. It's important to note that this automatic winding timepiece can nevertheless be manually wound. With the crown flushed to the case in it's first position, turn clockwise a minimum of 20 times. At the point that you see the seconds hand begin to advance around the dial, you can put the watch on the wrist, and the automatic winding system will feed off the energy and motion of your forearm, fully energizing the watch; however, should you wish to wind the watch to its full power reserve of 42 hours, simply continue turning the crown. It should also be noted that there is an intermediate position between winding and setting in which the date can be rapidly corrected by turning counterclockwise. It's important to note that this function, the quick set date, should never be employed between 9 pm and 3 am as this is the period during which the automatic date jumper of the watch is engaged. Attempting to use the quick set when the jumper is engaged can severely damage the movement. It's also important to note that if you have a rotation of watches and this timepiece sits for an extended period unused, IWC recommends winding a mechanical watch at least once a month to keep the lubricants evenly distributed across the movement.

When the watch is set, wound, and the date corrected, press the crown flushed to the case. This is important because only flushed to the case does the watch attain the factory rated 3 ATM hermeticity. Now, this water resistance comes with certain qualifiers. First and foremost, IWC reminds owners that although 3 ATM water resistance may be sufficient for light aquatic activity, nevertheless a leather strap should never be exposed to moisture nor should it be submerged as leather is a natural and porous material that will degrade in the presence of moisture.

Furthermore, the watch is only water resistant as rated when the crown is flushed to the case in it's first position. Moreover, the crown should never be turned nor should its setting functions be engaged when there is water on the watch or when it is submerged as this can bypass the seals and introduce water to the interior of the timepiece. Moreover, IWC advises that water resistance is not a static feature of a watch, and only when a watch has been recently overhauled or, at the very least, verified water tight to 3 bar should the timepiece be regarded as retaining the factory rated 3 ATM water resistance. IWC advices to have the watch water tested at an IWC authorized retailer on a yearly basis to ensure that as seals age and lubricants dry the watch maintains it's factory rated water resistance.

With respect to another threat to your timepiece, magnetism, IWC advises keeping the watch remote from strong magnetic flux densities such as speakers, subwoofers, refrigerator doors, and MRI equipment. Should you suspect, due to erratic time keeping, that your watch has become magnetized, take it to an IWC authorized retailer where specialized equipment is available to demagnetize your watch and restore it's performance.

Finally, with respect to mechanical service, IWC advises having the watch completely overhauled every two to five years. This should be done exclusively with an IWC authorized retailer, either an authorized independent dealer or a factory boutique, as only these agencies have the proper equipment, specialized personnel, and original factory replacement parts to ensure the integrity and performance of your investment.
