There is a place in Ukraine where ancient riffs still remember when they were the bottom of the Sarmatian Sea. The living organisms populating this sea died off and accumulated, having created from their remains a huge barrier reef. Over the ages, about 13 million years ago the sea receded to the southeast, leaving a hilly formation called the Podilski Tovtry on the surface.
