The Information Innovation Office (I2O) develops game-changing information science and technology to ensure information advantage for the United States and its allies. I2O sponsors basic and applied research in three thrust areas: Cyber – Deter cyber attack Deterrence entails convincing adversaries that any attack will not yield sufficient benefits given the costs of the likely response. We view three capabilities as key to cyber deterrence: Resilience: Operate through and rapidly recover following a cyber-attack; Situational awareness: Detect, understand, and attribute subtle or overt escalations of cyber conflict intensity and adversary attacks; and Response: Mount an accurate, robust, timely, effective, and appropriately scaled and calibrated cyber response to any cyber-attack. Analytics – Engage in the human domain The dynamic nature of operations in the human domain drives us towards a much more complete integration of intelligence and operations: Collect and curate data related to the human domain, as well as the other domains; Analyze data for entities, relationships, and trends; Synthesize models for situational awareness, prediction, and intervention; and Engage with adversaries, stakeholders, and allies within the human domain. Symbiosis – Partner with machines I2O envisions a future in which machines will function more as colleagues. Human-machine symbiosis emphasizes the integration of human-like cognition into the machine: Reactive processes coupled to perception and action; Deliberative processes to predict, plan and solve problems; and Reflective processes to reason and learn on the fly.
