While this lesson could be a rule for some songs (e.g. All Along The Watchtower), it's often found in the middle of a song. If you find yourself in a minor sixth (like the Am in Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah), try walking down three steps to the F major. That's the vi to IV walkdown (minor sixth to the major four). Looking at the chord probability tool (https://www.hooktheory.com/trends#node=1.6&key=C) you can see that after playing a C to Am, there's a 32% chance of playing the F major, or continuing that walkdown.
