2018 Department of Defense Education Activity Teacher of the Year Kara Ball offers advice to new teachers, based on the lessons she learned. Above all, she says, do not be afraid to make mistakes in front of your students. She admits that she used to spend a great deal of time perfecting her lessons, rather than focusing on creating memorable moments for her students. She emphasizes the value not only of making mistakes and 'failing,' but having the courage to do that in front of students. She says that as adults, we need to model the behavior of perseverance for them, as it is a critical lifelong skill.
