When Should I Apply for Social Security Disability Benefits?

You should apply for Social Security disability when you are not currently working and you realize and can prove that your medical condition will not allow you to return to any full time work. As I discuss in this video, Social Security disability is not designed to pay you for a temporary medical condition or because you can no longer perform the duties of your most recent job. You have to prove that you could not perform the duties of any job, including minimum wage jobs. You also need to be aware of the date your work credits for SSDI expire - usually your date last insured for SSDI will be about 5 years after you stop working.
