(2 Dec 2018) Central American migrants woke up on Sunday at the new shelter in Tijuana.
On Saturday, the city government of Tijuana said it has closed down a migrant shelter at a sports complex close to the US border that once held about 6,000 Central Americans who hope to get into the US.
The new shelter - a large building and concrete patio known as El Barretal – is much farther from the border.
"There is a disadvantage in that they put us further from the border where our pressure point was, to let the United States know that we are here, we are active, we are alive, and that we will not faint," said Honduran migrant Douglas Oviedo.
The city said in a statement the sports complex shelter was closed because of "bad sanitary conditions."
Tijuana officials had said earlier that nobody would be forced to move to the new facility, but they also warned they would stop offering food and medical services at the Benito Juarez sports complex.
Migrant Cindy Pineda said people have left their country in search of a better life for their families.
