(25 Oct 2018) Brazil's election front runner Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday backed off his pledge to take Brazil out of the Paris climate accord if he wins the presidency. The far-right candidate said he could discuss terms if Brazil's sovereignty is assured. Speaking at a press event with two Jiu-Jitsu masters who presented him with an honorary black belt, Bolsonaro compared his situation to that of US President Donald Trump, suggesting that the media "treats me with prejudice". He insisted that he does not oppose gay people but rather the 'gay kit', the pejorative nickname given to cancelled educational materials that the former leftist government considered introducing to reduce homophobia in public schools. On Thursday, a Datafolha poll said Workers' Party candidate Fernando Haddad had gained a little ground against Bolsonaro, though he still trailed by double digits. Haddad's support rose to 44 percent from 41 percent last week. Support for Bolsonaro declined to 56 percent from 59 percent. Datafolha interviewed 9,173 voters Wednesday and Thursday. The margin of error was two percentage points.
