This is the only Sun temple in South India. It is said Indra dug pushkarini with his vajrayudha hence it is called as Indra Pushkarini. As per Archeological experts based on stone inscriptions Ruler of Kalinga Kingdom Devendra varma must have built this temple in 7th century. It also reveals later grants were made by Aditya vishnu sarma and bhanu sarma of kalinga kingdom for maintenance. The temple is built in such a way as to make the Sun Rays focus on the feet of the God twice in the year in the months of March and September in the early hours of the day.
