Improving Application Perceived Performance

Speaker: Shudong Jin Thursday, October 16th, 2008 @ 11:30 AM For decades, computer networkshave been designed so that the network elements in the middle (e.g., routers) receive and forward packets which are the unmodified copies of the original ones sent by end-hosts. The network coding paradigm, originated from the information theory field, breaks the assumption of this routing architecture: nodes inside a packet-switched network can process and mix incoming packets into outgoing packets, as opposed to the simple store-and-forward approach of routing. This new paradigm has been shown to have many performance benefits. In particular, network coding gains attention in wireless ad hoc and mesh networks where the broadcast capability can be fully exploited to maximizing network capacity. In this talk, I will briefly introduce this new coding technique. While attractive and elegant in theory, the feasibility and true benefits of this paradigm, in particular for end-host applications and users, remain ill understood. I will illustrate both the potential and impact of this new coding technique in the context of an ongoing project.
