The first thing that you should do is to secure if the environment is safe. Make sure there is no danger to the person who has overdosed. If they are awake, keep a close watch on them to assure that there is no impairment in their breathing. If they are not responding or if they are falling asleep, call them by their name loudly. If a verbal stimulus is not effective, give them a painful stimulus: a knuckle in the sternum. A person who is in an active overdose can lose their breathing. It is characterized by their normal skin turning pale until it turns into a greener color. If it turns into a bluish ash color, it is a sign of a respiratory emergency. If this happens call 911, get a naloxone kit where you can find a barrier mask for a respiratory assist.
