The British Museum was founded in the 18th century and became one of the world鈥檚 largest institutions devoted to human history, art and archaeology. Its collections include objects from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, Asia, Africa and the Americas, with internationally known pieces such as the Rosetta Stone and sculptures from the Parthenon. The monumental Neoclassical building in Bloomsbury was transformed further by the creation of the Great Court, whose vast glass roof encloses the historic Reading Room at the center of the museum.
