The German Democratic Republic was founded on October 7,1949. The self-styled 'socialist state of workers and farmers' was founded in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany and the Soviet sector of occupied Berlin,and lasted 40 years. The oppressive system was brought down in the peaceful revolution of autumn 1989.
