Lena Bajza and Jammie Dumolt do the math on girls' welfare. What they describe locally and globally may shock you. They call for action for a Day of the Girl on May 8.

Bajza is a senior at Red Canyon High School in Eagle, Colorado. Two winters ago, she attended the 55th Status of Women in the World Conference at the United Nations in New York City. She gained knowledge about girls' and women's rights issues, how the UN works, policy making, the role of NGOs within the UN system, and how decisions made at the UN translate into on-the-ground changes.

Dumolt served as a delegate for Girls Learn International, an NGO initiated at RCHS in 2009. She helped draft the Girls' Statement that was presented to the UN Council. The experience was life changing and Dumolt hopes to earn degrees in Anthropology and Political Science and then become an International Lawyer representing women and girls rights.

They want to know, "When was the last time you struggled to get basic nutrition let alone have your life threatened just to get to school?"

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
