In the past few years, an alien invader has arrived in our forests, particularly our gorges, and has begun to kill one of our most beautiful species of trees. The culprit? A tiny, aphid-like insect called the "hemlock woolly adelgid." It's been found in Robert H. Treman State Park, it's at Taughannock Falls, at Cornell Plantations. in Watkins Glen State Park, and at many other sites. In this show, we join Mark Whitmore, forest entomologist at Cornell, and the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network to look for this deadly invader from Asia in the Sixmile Creek Natural Area. Will we find it? What can be done about it? See the show to find out! Join me, Tony Ingraham, as we visit parks in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, across the US, and around the world. As a former career state park ranger and environmental educator and interpreter, I am moved to share my love of our beautiful and historic landscapes. I have two series: Walk in the Park, a half hour show from public access TV in Ithaca, NY, and Park Minute. Each shows weekly. Find out more on my website http://walkinpark.com.
