Two years ago today, on November 27th, 2012, my grandfather passed away of heart failure. I love him, my whole family does. When we went to my mom's hometown to celebrate his life, I learned a lot more than I thought there was to know about my granddad, his care for his family, and especially his relationship with my grandma. I witnessed all the love around me and the stories people told about the love my grandparents had for each other. I was so fascinated by their love story that I decided to write it into a song. Here it is.

He walked in and he noticed her smile, and they talked for a while
She wore a dress and she held her head high, and said how she wanted to fly
He loved listening and she loved to talk, she thought he was her summer boardwalk
They were brighter than the New York skyline, and he saw how she wanted to shine...

And they were the king and the queen of that small town
They lived on a hill but to them it was the top of the world
And all they could think about was each other now
And to think it all started with the smile of a boy and a girl

Soon they stood among flowers and pews, as they promised love, saying "I do"
Her white dress and his sparkling blue eyes, they were finally meant to fly
They both lived the American dream, made the best and most beautiful team
They were brighter than the New York skyline, and they taught their kids how they could shine

And they were the king and the queen of that small town
They lived on a hill but to them it was the top of the world
And all that they worried about was here and now,
And to think they'd end up with two boys and a beautiful girl...

Life goes on and for 65 years, they loved through the laughs and the tears
But hearts eventually love for too long, and it was time for one to move on...

Always the king and the queen of that small town,
She lives on that hill that he's forever part of
And there's not the slightest of doubt that he's looking down
And remembers that smile that can bind such a beautiful love...

It took me about a year and a half to post this, but with the date that Thanksgiving fell on this year I just knew it was the right time. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving, and I hope this song connects with someone out there, or at least reminds you to be thankful for the love you have in your life. Thank you so much for watching, it means a lot!

(Hey Granddaddy, I'm thankful for you today. I like to think I'm making you proud.)
