US Army builds encampment at Texas/Mexico border

(5 Nov 2018) Various US Army engineering battalions deployed from Fort Riley, KS are setting up a facility to house US Customs and Border Protection as well as other armed service personnel sent to the US-Mexico border. President Donald Trump ordered troops to the border in response to a caravan of migrants slowly making its way through Mexico toward the United States. More than 7,000 active duty troops have been told to deploy to Texas, Arizona and California. They are a mix of forces, including military police, an assault helicopter battalion, various communications, medical and headquarters units, combat engineers, planners and public affairs units. The encampment is adjacent to the US-Mexico port of entry in Donna, Texas, about 20 miles from McAllen. A Pentagon spokesman said Sunday that the Defense Department has not received a request at this time to build facilities intended to house migrants.
