SSudan president and returning opposition leader celebrate peace deal

(31 Oct 2018) A nationwide peace celebration was held in South Sudan as its President Salva Kiir apologised for the "immense suffering" caused by the civil war. Opposition leader Riek Machar returned to the capital Juba for the first time since fleeing the country and said South Sudan "deserved" peace. Kiir told the crowd: "You have endured immense suffering and the weight of responsibility heavily falls on my shoulders." Under the new peace deal signed on September 12, Machar will once again serve as a vice president in Kiir's government. This will be the third time the two men will try to work together since the country erupted into civil war in 2013. The last attempt failed when fighting broke out in the capital Juba in July 2016 and Machar escaped the country on foot. Also attending the celebrations were South Sudan's other opposition groups and the leaders of Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Somalia and Egypt.
