United Nations, New York, 24 June 2009 - In his opening remarks at the United Nations Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for global unity.

Mr Ban said the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) has touched "every part of the world" and that the effects of climate change and extreme poverty have in recent times become even more obvious.

According to Mr Ban the current crisis has not only highlighted the need for unity, but the need for international forums such as the United Nations where countries from around the world can come to agree upon viable solutions to problems that affect everyone.

Of the impact of the GFC, Mr Ban said, "Millions more families are being pushed into poverty. 50 million jobs could be lost this year alone. Already nearly a billion people go to sleep hungry every night. Too many children are dying from preventable diseases while too many mothers die in childbirth. We need international solidarity. We need the United Nations."
