Op. 32, No.2 by S. Rachmaninov Ilyinka Street is one of the three main streets of Kitay-gorod in central Moscow. The street, one of the oldest in Moscow passes from the Ilyinsky Gate Square to Red Square. The name derives from the XVI century and the the Ilinsky Monastery that once stood in the street. The Ilyinsky Gate was built in 1535 under the supervision of the Italian engineer P. Maly. Initially, the gate was called Trinity. The tower over the gate dated to 1680 was renamed Ilyinsky..The tower with the gate and the adjacent section of the wall was dismantled in 1934 The Church of St. Nicholas the "Great Cross' near the gate was built at the end of the 17th century. The main altar of the temple was consecrated in the name of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - similarly destroyed in 1934.. During the 17 and 18th centuries, the street was known for its many shops and small businesses. The Moscow Exchange was built and a new Gostiny Dvor (the futrure GUM) was constructed.. By the late 19th century, Ilyinka had become the centre of Moscow's financial life and wholesale trade... with the major banks of the Russian Empire located here.....
