Happy New Year! (Plus some thoughts as 2009 ends)

It's not the rides. It's not the special programs or events. It's not the classes. It's not the friendly, welcoming staff. It's the animals. That's what attracts me to the Philadelphia Zoo at least twice a month. I want everyone to visit zoos as often as I do to see for themselves, zoo animals have good lives! During my zoo visits I observe baby animals that are growing bigger every day, adults growing older, individual animals forming friendships or squabbling, individuals of different species interacting with each other, and animals being curious and experiencing things they wouldn't experience if they were in the wild. And I observe humans deciding which animals are their favorites, and, as a result, being inspired to learn more about and to protect wildlife. That's why I love the Philadelphia Zoo, and all good zoos!
