Description- Greetings! The other night during the Homestead Honey Hour, Freecycle came up in the chatroom. I love Freecycle. As luck would have it, this past Friday, I was sitting at the computer and an ad was posted by a woman who had three lawn tractors in working order that she was giving away. We were number two on the list so we got second choice. We could have taken both of them, but opted for just the one. Now, the tractor that we currently have was given to us by a woman that I used to work with because her husband had gotten a new one. We have used it well for the last 6 years and it is still going strong. It is ugly but it works. it doesn't have a hood and it has it's issues, but when we need to mow the lawn it is there. The tractor we got for free hasn't been run for the last 4 years, but Rick is working on it. He got the battery to charge and is in process of putting together a working tractor from the one we already have and this one. I estimate that we saved about 2000.00 by getting this for free. We can make this last for another 6 years. For certain someone will be getting rid of another one by then. Rick and I always say that what we need will find us when it is supposed to. It always happens to work out for us. We may have to be patient and we may not be able to get the newest, shiniest whatnot of the moment, but we always get what we need. Mostly we get it for free. Not because we can't afford to buy it new, but because we feel like we should always try and get something used in good condition instead of contributing to the consumer machine. I also personally feel that it is good to give away useful things to people who need them rather than try to make a buck off of them. It serves two purposes. First it gets them out of your way and helps you do good for others, second it gives a second or third life to something that most people would just throw out. We live in a very disposable society. That is why we are in the pickle we are in. We don't ever want the old stuff, we only want new, shiny and high tech. I think we should always try to give things second life! I hope you will check out freecycle in your area. You can check out the main website and it will direct you to a group in your area. http://www.freecycle.org/ Enjoy! Have Fun! Freecycle!
