If you want a beautiful garden in the spring, you have to start planting your bulbs in the fall.

Step 1: Store your bulbs properly
Store your bulbs in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight while you are waiting to plant them.

Step 2: Wait for the right temperatures
Check your thermometer and wait until average nighttime temperatures have fallen to around 50°F or cooler for 2 weeks before putting the bulbs in the ground.

Step 3: Prepare a planting bed
Dig and loosen a planting bed with a spade, and dress the soil with conventional soil amendments.

Tip
Plant on a slope or in a raised bed if drainage is poor. Bulbs planted in warm, wet soil may succumb to rot or mildew.

Step 4: Plant the bulbs
Press the bulbs into the soil in the planting area and cover them with more soil. Plant the bulbs three times as deep as the bulb is wide. In hot climates or sandy soil, plant the bulbs slightly deeper.

Tip
Consult a plant encyclopedia or nursery for information about planting a specific bulb variety.

Step 5: Water the bulbs
Water the bulbs after planting if there is not sufficient rainfall to keep the roots wet. Do not overwater, as this can lead to bulb rot.

Did You Know?
The Romans brought daffodils to Britain, thinking the sap from them – actually a skin irritant – had healing powers.
