(29 Nov 2018) LEADIN: The detention of the top Palestinian official in Jerusalem has been extended until December 2. Adnan Ghaith was arrested alongside 32 activists earlier this week. STORYLINE: Adnan Ghaith's arrest has been extended by an Israeli court. The top Palestinian official in Jerusalem was arrested along with 32 Palestinian activists earlier this week for allegedly supporting Palestinian security services. The offence is in violation of previous agreements between Israel and the Palestinians. Ghaith will be held until December 2. Another six activists were ordered to be held in detention until Sunday while 24 activists were released. The arrests appear to have been prompted by the detention of a Palestinian resident of east Jerusalem who allegedly sold property in the city to Jews - a punishable crime under Palestinian law. That detention was a bold move by the Palestinians because, also according to previous accords with Israel, they cannot arrest Jerusalem residents. Israeli police would not disclose details as to how the activists had been supporting the security services, but their case appears to be related to the property sale arrest.
