Litter Crackdown

Highway Patrol troopers are cracking down on trashy people traveling down North Carolina highways. They're stepping up enforcement of litter laws and handing out tickets to people allowing junk to leave their vehicles. Troopers say tossing out trash is creating more than just an eyesore. They're worried about the safety problems garbage on the road can cause. Sgt. Craig Harris, NC Highway Patrol, "if you're driving down the road and something flies out of the back of a pickup truck, or somebody throws something out that could strike your vehicle, it could strike your windshield, could obstruct you from being able to see the road, cause an accident." Littering can also be expensive with fines as much as $1,000 and one penalty point on a driver's license.
