(5 Jun 1977) The 198th renewal of the Derby Stakes and Epsom Racecourse is bedecked with flags in this Jubilee Year. ® Her Majesty the Queen arrived at the course to a tumultuous greeting from the crowd. Together with other members of the Royal Family and accompanied by Lord Halifax, the Queen visited the paddock to study the form. ® Hot favourite to win was the Aga Khan's horse 'Blushing Groom' but in the event he was only placed third. ® As if to set the seal on the Jubilee, riding in his 25th Derby, Lester Piggott was first past the post. 'The Minstrel', owned by Robert Sangster, won by a neck from 'Hot Grove', giving Lester Piggott a record eighth Derby win.
